A heartbreaking video posted online shows the moment an Ohio father had to tell his son his mother died from a drug overdose.
In the video posted to Facebook on Oct. 10., Brenden Bickerstaff-Clark was seen sitting across his eight-year-old son, holding his hand and letting the boy know he had something to say.
“I have something to tell you, OK?,” Bickerstaff-Clark said in the nearly three-minute long video. “Mommy died last night.”
“What?” the boy asked.
“Mommy died last night, OK?,” Bickerstaff-Clark repeated.
“What do you mean, my mom? How?” the boy said before collapsing into a woman sitting beside him.
“From drugs,” Bickerstaff-Clark answered. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. I love you.”
On Bickerstaff-Clark’s Facebook page, he said he had someone film the private moment to bring awareness to drug addiction.
“This [is] for any and every addict with children. Today I had to tell my [eight]-year-old son that his mommy died from a drug overdose last night. This is the realization and reality of our disease,” Bickerstaff-Clark wrote.
He also mentioned that he’s a recovering addict himself who, at the time of the posting, had been clean for 94 days.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2,744 deaths in Ohio in 2014 were due to drug overdoses.
“Don’t let this disease have to make someone tell your child that [you’re] dead because of drugs. This was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. My son has no mother because of heroin,” Bickerstaff-Clark continued in his post.
He went on to urge addicts to seek help so children won’t have to suffer and deal with the consequences of their parents’ actions.
